What is Special Olympics Orange County?

Special Olympics Orange County, founded in 1973, is affiliated with and accredited by Special Olympics Florida, a chapter of Special Olympics Incorporated, headquartered in Washington, D.C.  Special Olympics Orange County provides services to more than 800 athletes with  mental retardation and developmental disabilities throughout the county.

Our Mission:

The mission of Special Olympics Orange County is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of quality programs for children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Our Objective:

Through successful sports training and competition, Special Olympics athletes develop physically, socially, and psychologically.  The positive experiences that the athletes have in ongoing Special Olympics programs build confidence and self-image which carries over into all aspects of their lives.

Participation:

800 - 900 Athletes    60 Coaches    410 Volunteers

Training:

Special Olympics Orange County is founded on the philosophy that quality training is critical to success in sports. Comprehensive, year-round training and competition is available to every athlete, conducted by talented volunteer coaches.  Training programs have been developed and implemented to improve each athlete's overall physical fitness and sports-specific competence.

Games:

Special Olympics Orange County is the first level of competition that athletes-in-training experience in a series of advancement competitions, culminating in State Games. The State Games events include Opening and Closing Ceremonies with all the fan-fare of Olympic competition, the lighting of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope, awards ceremonies and a variety of social activities.
